European digital phone line standard created by ITU-TS (International Telecommunications Union, Telecommunications Standards Sector) with its name set by CEPT (Council of European Postal and Telecommunications). It is the European equivalent to the T-carrier system used in the United States, even though the North-American system uses lower transfer rates.

E1 line has a 2 Mbps transfer rate and can divided into 32 64 Kbps channels. Leasing E1 lines below 2 Mbps can be done in multiples of 64 Kbps.
It can be interconnected to T-1 lines for international use.

Its variants include:

  • E2: 8.448 Mbps.
  • E3: 34.368 Mbps.
  • E4: 139.264 Mbps.
  • E5: 565.148 Mbps.
  • DS3: 44.736 Mbps.
