Real Time Clock
RTC is the PC real time clock, i.e. the clock in charge of the system date and time. Nowadays this circuit is embedded in the motherboard chipset, in a circuit called south bridge. A battery located on the motherboard is in charge of keeping this clock working even when the computer is turned off. This battery is also in charge of feeding the configuration memory (a.k.a. CMOS).
