Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology
SMART is a technology found on latest IDE hard drives. This technology is capable of detecting errors, even before they occur.
In order to work you need a SMART-capable hard disk drive and BIOS and SMART function must be enabled at the motherboard setup.
SMART is present inside a circuit on the hard drive logic board. This circuit monitors the status of the hard drive heads, motors, plates, logic board, etc and send an error message if any error is found, allowing you to exchange your hard drive before losing all your data.
