Partial Response, Maximum Likelihood
PRML is a circuit used to read the magnetic hard disk surface and help on demodulating the data read. Before this kind of circuit was used, the hard disk controller read only the signal peaks found on the magnetic surface. The problem was that noise was interpreted as peaks and weak signals weren’t detected. PRML circuit reads the signal in several points (and not only at its peak), detecting correctly where the data peak is located, even on a weak signal or if it read just noise.
Detecting the signal peak is very important because the way data is modulated. In order to understand this better, read MFM and RLL terms.
