Video Graphics Array or Video Graphics Adapter

(1) Video standard launched by IBM with their PS/2 computer. VGA standard has a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels with 16 simultaneous colors, from a 262,144 color palette. Characters in text mode are presented in a 9x16 matrix. VGA cards use a 15-pin female connector, which must be connected to a VGA or Super VGA video monitor. Video monitors from other standards (MDA, CGA, EGA, etc) don’t work with this kind of video card.

(2) A synonym for video card.
