Rosewill Wind Ryder (RZLS142-AP) is a simple mid-tower case targeted to the average user looking for an inexpensive case with a little bit more features than very cheap cases. Here is a summary of what we found about this case. Strong Points - Magnetic latch for the front door.
- The two USB ports are far from each other allowing you to install two “fat” USB devices at the same time.
Weak Points - In our experience plastic mechanisms for holding daughter boards tend to break very easily, so it would be better if Rosewill used a steel mechanism or simply used thumbscrews. On the other hand Rosewill told us that they will replace any broken part free of charge.
- Front door only opens 90º (not fully as it should).
- Front door looks cheap.
- No screwless mechanism for holding disk drives. Rosewill website says “Tool-less design” but that is inaccurate, as you still have to use regular screws.
- The holding mechanisms for hard disk drives don’t work satisfactorily, requiring you to add more screws to each drive. This happens because this case has holding mechanisms on just one of the sides of the hard disk drive bays and not on the two sides as it should.
On the day we published this review this case was listed as having a USD 85 suggested retail price on Rosewill's website. At that time, we said that this price was unrealistic for this case and the correct price for it should be USD 40 or below that. We are glad to see a manufacturer taking our constructive criticism into account: the day after we published this review they said they would be lowering their suggested price to USD 70 and at NewEgg.com they already lowered the price for exactly what we suggested: USD 40. So if you want to spend only up to USD 40 on a case, Rosewill Wind Ryder (RZLS142-AP) is certainly an option. However don't expect miracles: it isn't a "perfect" product. If you want a product with a better overall quality and more features you will need to spend more. On the USD 50-60 range, for example, we have the A+ Curbic from Tagan that we recently reviewed, which provides a great cost/benefit to average users looking for an inexpensive mid-tower case with several extra features. |
